We went to ‘Indulgence’ and did I indulge.

Posted by Michelle on September 11, 2008

Oooooh this is a toughy for me this morning. I am not used to going out on a school night :), partying like there’s no tomorrow, only getting 5 hours of sleep (this factor alone makes me cranky), AND keeping my commitments such as getting up and posting my blog for the day. Throw in going to class – nope, not today. Sorry, Ms. Crystal, if you’re reading this, this girl is playing hooky today.  There is only so much I can do in the state I am in.

Doug and I were invited to attend Harry Denton’s 12th Anniversary ‘Indulgence’ party last night, at his signature Harry Denton’s Starlight Room, and being that it feels like we haven’t ‘indulged’ in awhile, we decided to go out and do just that. Harry ‘indulged’ us by seating us at this perfect booth right in the heat of it all while continually ‘indulging’ us with champagne and delightful conversation.  Our good friend Steven surprised us with his presence, and joined us at our booth…I was just loving being surrounded by my favorite men. Could it get any better? Yeah, get me out on that dance floor for a spin and my night is just perfect. Of course that is exactly what I did and yes it was just perfect.

I’ve known Harry for over 15 years now. I met him when I was dancing at his first establishment ‘Southside” in the south of Market in SF.  I wanted to cocktail at Southside, so while shaking it up on the dance floor  with him (Harry is too much fun to dance with), I offered up my services and he bit. The very next week this girl was practicing how to carry a tray above her head, because I was just hired in one of SF’s hottest bars and I had no experience. I handled it I must say,  dropping only a tray full of drinks on top of my head once.  Since then Harry and I  have been good friends.

It’s always fun at the Starlight Room and has a sweet place in my heart. Not only because I adore Harry and had the wonderful opportunity to design the gowns that the cocktail servers wear, and not only because it is on top of a very famous and old hotel, the Sir Francis Drake, with one of the most spectacular views of San Francisco, but because Doug and I were so fortunate to have our wedding reception in this special place. It was not only beautiful and one of my happiest memories, but a memorable celebration, a party to say the least (people still talk about it) and each time I am there it is as if the party never ended. The Champagne flowed then and it did last night.  Harry knows how to throw a good party.

Oh and later on in the evening, Doug and I decided to escape onto the fire escape and enjoy a view from outside…seems we were not alone. Harry came out and joined us for a ’smoke’ and a little chit chat…and yes, we do have a few celebs here in SF…seems Sean Penn was ‘indulging’ out on the fire escape too.

And to carry on in the mood of  ’indulgence’, Doug and I zipped over to ‘Sparkey’s’ a 24-hour joint  that we used to visit after a night of partying.  Once again we ‘indulged’, only this time in pancakes, eggs and fries. Ya gotta love late night munchies…however, somehow I remember it tasting much better years ago.

************

Thanks ZL!

Hey Doug:  Bali ho – let’s go! Even if McCain and Ms Pain don’t.

Hello Zhun: Once again, I am envious of all that you are experiencing. I wish you could send photos.

Okay, got to go. Now I’m going to ‘indulge’ in some morning Java and drag myself to class. Have a good one.

What ’state’ is your life in?

Posted by Michelle on August 7, 2008

I am feeling a bit disconnected from the world lately. I got an email from my dear friend Tiwi the other day and she was writing exactly the same way as I was feeling – She even used the same words to describe it: ‘feeling disconnected’. I wondered what was going on in her life.

I am aware that ‘the universe is random looking for order looking for random’…. Could it be that we are both in randomness at opposite ends of the world? Random means done or chosen without method or conscious decision….haphazard, stray, erratic; chance.

My haphazardness feels more  ‘chaotic’ to me. I know it sounds like I am being dramatic but the word ‘haphazard’ just doesn’t fit or resonate with what my life feels like right now. ‘Chaotic’ rings for me, yet it is more about everything around me and not my state of mind, thankfully. I am pretty much in ‘order’ in the midst of this ‘chaos’.

However as I stated above, I am feeling a bit disconnected.  This state of ‘random’  is having an effect on my social life which is why I am pulling away from friends and family and hanging close to home. It is a time for reflection without too much analysis I must add. Living in my head feeding my ego instead of my heart does not serve me well.

So the ‘chaos’ in my life has shown up in my dreams and in a very profound and revealing way as dreams tend to do sometimes. Visualize this:  Massive and I mean MASSIVE structures were flying at me.  Just like in the movie ‘Star Wars’ when they are flying their ships dodging huge asteroids coming towards them.

Well that is how this dream was only I wasn’t in a space ship….I was on land with nothing around to protect me.   And the massive structures coming towards me were huge ‘random’ (There’s that word again:) parts of space ships and structures that looked like scaffolding for a building, only again in ‘random’ shapes.  They flew towards me but never landed on me. And as much as I was dodging them I was once again  in ‘order’, in the appropriate place, safe, in the midst of the ‘chaos’.

I remember feeling no fear, and at one point even guesstimating as one was flying towards me where it would land so that I could avoid it.  One in a calm state of mind would never think that way. One in fear would be screaming and running all over the place acting ‘chaotic’ themselves.  I was no where near this state.

I woke up pretty early after that dream. I didn’t want to go back to sleep. Instead I thought about it for some time so that I could remember it and blog about it this morning.

I believe as many do, that our dreams are little notes to ourselves.  Maybe even lessons. Could it be that this dream is preparing me to command my ship? Or could it be just a sign that no matter what chaos is going on around me, I will be level headed and make the right decisions for me. I will be safe. Maybe both.

What are your dreams telling you? Share. Blog me.

Hi Frank: What are you doing living in Vietnam? Are you in Saigon? I have great memories from my travels there.  Dying to know which hotel you and your friends converse in…You don’t want to look like nuts…hmm…my curiosity has gotten the better of me.  But that’s okay, you can keep your little secret.

I used to collect crystals many years ago and I have a few very special ones. I never had time to really enjoy VN. I was working so much and any time off I was in a spa relaxing or shopping the markets. I never saw any crystals but then I was probably not in the right places to look.

Happy that you and your friends enjoy the reads and…that you finally got in.

Hi Ghazan: I know it must seem that way. As much as we are all world citizens most people are just too involved in living their own lives and seeing the atrocities that happen, leaves one feeling helpless – what can one do? Sadly, most turn off the TV and go on with their lives. The program that Doug and I were watching the other night told us nothing new. I do remember saying that I didn’t want to support China by  buying anything made from there. But our entire country would have to take that stand in order to have an impact. I have to think more about this…Any suggestions – I am open and willing to hear.

I am running out of time this morning, and I see more comments have come – so sorry…I will address the rest of you tomorrow.  Have a peaceful day.

Are you and FMS’er or a FOMO?

Posted by Michelle on June 24, 2008

I had  three girls over for a late lunch on Saturday – a pre-party before listening to some cool music at the Chapel of Chimes Mausoleum summer solstice event – a fab event I might add. Anyway, while munching and chitchatting away we got into the discussion of material wealth and of course I brought up my blog entry from last week, ‘Do I own things or…’

I have to say I am very lucky….I have so many groups of really diverse awesome women that I hang with.  And I can tell you this particular group unlike other groups I hang with, is not about the ‘material girl’.  Not that they don’t like beautiful things or desire wealth, – who doesn’t? But, accumulating wealth is not the priority. Yeah…all of these women, who happen to be single, are all pretty self sufficient, most of them are super creative, and not one of them owns a house.   Not that you can’t be all of the above and have money but that’s not my point No…this group doesn’t try to keep up with the Joneses, not their style. Their main competition if you want to call it that, is in regards to ‘fun’ and ‘enjoying life’, and they do an amazing job with little dough and a huge dose of creativity and collaboration.  Ah…Now we’re talkin’.

Terra whom I have spoken about before and whom some of you have met, explains it this way. She says that no one in their group of friends, people that they usually hang with, (I am a usual but not a core part of this group),  don’t compete for personal abundance (All though I have to say quite a few of them are rolling in it!). ‘The competition is all about how much fun we’re going to have and just how many parties in a week are we going to attend?’  And the biggie question…’who had the most fun at which party?’ She says it with a big grin and I know it is true because I have experienced this competitiveness in her and her huge circle of friends. I find it quite amusing but believe me, it is always a trip, and most of the time a blast into the past – some of these people are San Francisco 60’s Beatniks and rich hippies, who never left the scene.   We try to attend whatever event Terra and the group invites us too. I stay out of the competition but I sure like to party with them.

Oh one last thing…the point of this blog entry: They describe themselves as FMS’ers: Fear of missing something’ and the latest: FOMO’s or ‘fear of missing out’. Because of these ‘titles’ hardly anyone does a no show in fear of the obvious…I think it’s hilarious.

Are you one of these? Or do you have another acronym that describes you? Do tell!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Tal:  You bet!  You know I am ready for a little chat on the Climax with Azza. I contacted her yesterday to let her know, but not sure if she is receiving it in real time. When you talk to her please let her know I am available anytime.  Just try to give me at least a 30 minutes heads – up if you can. Thanks.

Hi Sparkle: Interesting topic choice for your blog – good luck with it!

Zen Lill:  Will do!

Hi Al:  So sorry to hear that your prep was keeping you down. Sounds like you went through an awful bout. I hope that it is finally over.  I wish I could’ve given you a heads up earlier but I was not aware of your happenings until I blogged it. So you must be excited?!  But….

Al….we need to talk…I have had a quite a few emails in regards to your comment.  So….it seems from what you have written that you are disclosing the info that you and Howie, OUR Howie is your house mate? Or am I reading this wrong? I know that there is a man named Howard that you live with/take care of.  Are we all now privy to the fact that Howard is actually Howie?  Please confirm or deny and clear it up here. Thanks.

The Chosen One

Posted by Michelle on June 13, 2008

Doug needed a good laugh last night, and who am I to turn down a good laugh especially when it involves Jack Black, one of my most fav actors. If you are a JB fan like we are (loved him in ‘School of Rock’), you will love him in this role.  Why do I suspect that his personality is not much different from the characters that he plays? I would just love to have Jack as a friend….I might even adopt him if I could…that is just how cool and funny I think he is.

Anyway, if you haven’t guessed it by now, we went to see the animated Kung Fu Panda…his latest flick. And I have to tell you it was hilarious, although maybe we were the only ones really laughing in the theater.  JB plays a noodle cooking panda named Po who dreams and inspires to becoming the ‘chosen one’: The Dragon Warrior! Unfortunately he is fat, slow, and not only out of shape, but is basically a level zero in Kung Fu.  Dustin Hoffman is perfect at playing the guru, master Shifu, a little reminiscent of Yoda, so he is instantly likable in a very familiar way.  Can you tell who plays ‘Tigress’?

I won’t tell you the rest, but I thought it was sweet, thought provoking, and funny all at the same time.  How could I not like a movie that quotes one of my favorite sayings, ‘Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift…that is why we call it the present.’

Today is a gift…every day is a gift. Be ‘present’ and enjoy it.

An unwelcome visitor

Posted by Michelle on June 11, 2008

http://www.atpm.com/7.02/mobius/dreamscape.shtml

It’s already 75 degrees in our house and it is only 7:30am.  Howie,  I can’t imagine what it must be like in Florida.  As much as you must be dreading the heat with all that humidity,  I am lovin’ it here.  In spite of the warmth in our house – all of our flowers are bitin’ the dust,  I’m still making my morning latte; today I really need to wake up.

I had one of those early morning wake ups, not sure what time but it was still dark,  where I couldn’t get back to sleep, which is rare for me because I love my sleep.  The only thing that prevents me from sleeping in the first place is when I am super excited about something or I’m trying to figure something out that has a deadline.  If I am distraught, sleep is my best friend.

However, last night when I woke up I couldn’t sleep for any of the above reasons. Last night, I had an unwelcome visitor; the dark side appeared: my ego.  It  decided to beat me up and remind me of everything I had failed at in my life. It went way back into the past 20 years ago and slowly made its way to the present.  I drifted in and out of sleep as the inventory of my mistakes, failures, bad choices etc. presented themselves.  I almost started to cry but I didn’t want to wake Doug up so I quickly changed my thoughts.  Why I hadn’t halted my thinking mind earlier was probably due to the fact that I was very tired and floating in and out of consciousness.

Before I go on, let it be known that I am not fishing for compliments from my friends, family or my husband as I write this….and really most of you, my readers hardly know anything about me. I’m just bringing this up because this is where I am  this morning. I don’t need the recognition of my successes or my failures from anyone; I am well aware of them all and I wouldn’t change my life in any way. I don’t feel that I am a failure in what I have pursued in my life, nor do I feel that I have done all that I can. I am still exploring….And thankfully, I do learn from my mistakes.

But I am also not writing this this morning to tout myself….not in the mood. I am just feeling a a tiny bit melancholy from last night…nothing I won’t get over after my latte and some warmth on my face :)

Readers:  Has this ever happened to you in the middle of the night?

Hey ‘fivemore…’:  Welcome…nice to see a smiling face with the comment!

Ah…my latte is ready.  Peace everyone.  Hey, miss my regular peeps, TAO and Earthling girls included – Hope you all are hanging in there.

Gratefully your blog host,

michelle
