We went to ‘Indulgence’ and did I indulge.

Oooooh this is a toughy for me this morning. I am not used to going out on a school night :), partying like there’s no tomorrow, only getting 5 hours of sleep (this factor alone makes me cranky), AND keeping my commitments such as getting up and posting my blog for the day. Throw in going to class – nope, not today. Sorry, Ms. Crystal, if you’re reading this, this girl is playing hooky today.  There is only so much I can do in the state I am in. 

Doug and I were invited to attend Harry Denton’s 12th Anniversary ‘Indulgence’ party last night, at his signature Harry Denton’s Starlight Room, and being that it feels like we haven’t ‘indulged’ in awhile, we decided to go out and do just that. Harry ‘indulged’ us by seating us at this perfect booth right in the heat of it all while continually ‘indulging’ us with champagne and delightful conversation.  Our good friend Steven surprised us with his presence, and joined us at our booth…I was just loving being surrounded by my favorite men. Could it get any better? Yeah, get me out on that dance floor for a spin and my night is just perfect. Of course that is exactly what I did and yes it was just perfect.

I’ve known Harry for over 15 years now. I met him when I was dancing at his first establishment ‘Southside” in the south of Market in SF.  I wanted to cocktail at Southside, so while shaking it up on the dance floor  with him (Harry is too much fun to dance with), I offered up my services and he bit. The very next week this girl was practicing how to carry a tray above her head, because I was just hired in one of SF’s hottest bars and I had no experience. I handled it I must say,  dropping only a tray full of drinks on top of my head once.  Since then Harry and I  have been good friends.

It’s always fun at the Starlight Room and has a sweet place in my heart. Not only because I adore Harry and had the wonderful opportunity to design the gowns that the cocktail servers wear, and not only because it is on top of a very famous and old hotel, the Sir Francis Drake, with one of the most spectacular views of San Francisco, but because Doug and I were so fortunate to have our wedding reception in this special place. It was not only beautiful and one of my happiest memories, but a memorable celebration, a party to say the least (people still talk about it) and each time I am there it is as if the party never ended. The Champagne flowed then and it did last night.  Harry knows how to throw a good party.

Oh and later on in the evening, Doug and I decided to escape onto the fire escape and enjoy a view from outside…seems we were not alone. Harry came out and joined us for a ’smoke’ and a little chit chat…and yes, we do have a few celebs here in SF…seems Sean Penn was ‘indulging’ out on the fire escape too.

And to carry on in the mood of  ’indulgence’, Doug and I zipped over to ‘Sparkey’s’ a 24-hour joint  that we used to visit after a night of partying.  Once again we ‘indulged’, only this time in pancakes, eggs and fries. Ya gotta love late night munchies…however, somehow I remember it tasting much better years ago.

Happy Birthday America!

“Land of the free and home of the brave!’ ‘Come to America where you too can live the American dream!’….’that is if your government will step aside and allow you Life, Liberty and The Pursuit of Happiness.’

I decided in honor of our great nation….god that sounds so canned…oh well…I decided to share with you a section of ’The Declaration of Independence’, a so-called radical document of its time. 

‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.’

Let’s break it down:

It states that ‘all men are created equal’ – Yes, but let’s leave out penis size and intelligence, and then we can say ‘all men are created equal’. (chuckle:)  But the more important question to ask is, ‘Are they treated equally’? We all know the answer to that one. Need I say more?

Okay next:  We are endowed by our Creator ‘with certain unalienable rights’ - meaning, rights that are absolute, non-negotiable, ones natural rights. Hmm…sounds good…looks good on paper, but let’s look at those rights: ‘Life, Liberty, and The Pursuit of Happiness’. ‘Life’: Okay, we are living, breathing human beings…but it is also the right to grow and live…you know, no one should harm another person by taking their life from them, aka: ‘Don’t kill another.’ Unfortunately this happens every day.  ‘Liberty’: FREEDOM!! – George Michael sang it best. But seriously, it gives us the power to choose. And not in the sense of being unrestrained but more in the sense of being able to choose different possibilities. And the last natural right: ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’ – Meaning, go for it – your dreams, what ever…BUT, in the process, make sure that you don’t harm anyone or violate their natural rights in the process. This is where ‘do unto others…’ might come in handy.

Next….’That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, (We won’t even bring up the lack of women here) deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.’ – That’s us – we are the governed ones.  We are giving them, the government, power through our permission; to protect our rights from threat. Enough said. Clear? 

‘That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.’: Basically if the government is treating us unfairly and denying us our rights: ‘Life, Liberty, and The Pursuit of Happiness’, then it is not protecting our rights.  When all is said and done, if the government is not protecting our rights then they can be replaced. Uh..can we replace them NOW!

So..Readers: These are my thoughts. Maybe you feel differently – share. How do you think our government is holding up these days? Blog me.

Oh…and let me just say…I’m not down on our forefathers…not at all. I’ll use Anonz’s words, ’cause they’re good ones, and say that, ‘The Declaration of Independence’ was an idea that felt good. I genuinely feel that it was written with good intentions. It’s just too bad that as time went on the good intentions got lost somewhere between selfishness and greed, and in the forms of racism and sexism to name a few.

Do I sound like I am ending this on a downer note?  I don’t think I am being untruthful…but it is the 4th if July, Independence Day.  It is a celebratory time!  The United States is still the best country to live in. And don’t get me wrong…I am so grateful for all that I have and most of all for all of the choices and possibilities available to me.  We may be ignorant at times but we are blissful! (tee hee hee:)

Dearest Madaline:  How is it that you can contact Anonz and not have ANY communica with moi?  Or is it because he’s a man and you’re trying to get your thrills? Remember he’s just like a puppy even with the added ‘two’….or have you persuaded Tal to succumb to a wish? Ha ha! Maybe.  Sorry Anonz to make you the butt of the joke, but I couldn’t resist. Just funnin’ with maddie at your expense. You have proven you are much more than just a handsome face. Speaking of…how is the face?  And the added two?  You don’t have to answer that :) Stop me now please…(I just can’t get dick off my mind today!:) 

Anyway…back to maddie…

I have been emailing you and trying to talk to you for days on my blog – Are the lines down? I think not. Frankly, it is BS that you and the girls have taken a leave, let me remind you, an unauthorized one. Po’d that I haven’t unleashed you and the girls? Or just too busy…but too busy to show face? Too busy to entertain us with your bitch badinage and enlighten us with your worldly knowledge? Am I sounding a bit sarcastic here? – excuusse me. I don’t mean to be…

As much as I love livin’ in the good ‘ol US of A, I am so ready to get out of here – You?

Are you and FMS’er or a FOMO?

I had  three girls over for a late lunch on Saturday – a pre-party before listening to some cool music at the Chapel of Chimes Mausoleum summer solstice event – a fab event I might add. Anyway, while munching and chitchatting away we got into the discussion of material wealth and of course I brought up my blog entry from last week, ‘Do I own things or…’  

I have to say I am very lucky….I have so many groups of really diverse awesome women that I hang with.  And I can tell you this particular group unlike other groups I hang with, is not about the ‘material girl’.  Not that they don’t like beautiful things or desire wealth, – who doesn’t? But, accumulating wealth is not the priority. Yeah…all of these women, who happen to be single, are all pretty self sufficient, most of them are super creative, and not one of them owns a house.   Not that you can’t be all of the above and have money but that’s not my point No…this group doesn’t try to keep up with the Joneses, not their style. Their main competition if you want to call it that, is in regards to ‘fun’ and ‘enjoying life’, and they do an amazing job with little dough and a huge dose of creativity and collaboration.  Ah…Now we’re talkin’. 

Terra whom I have spoken about before and whom some of you have met, explains it this way. She says that no one in their group of friends, people that they usually hang with, (I am a usual but not a core part of this group),  don’t compete for personal abundance (All though I have to say quite a few of them are rolling in it!). ‘The competition is all about how much fun we’re going to have and just how many parties in a week are we going to attend?’  And the biggie question…’who had the most fun at which party?’ She says it with a big grin and I know it is true because I have experienced this competitiveness in her and her huge circle of friends. I find it quite amusing but believe me, it is always a trip, and most of the time a blast into the past – some of these people are San Francisco 60’s Beatniks and rich hippies, who never left the scene.   We try to attend whatever event Terra and the group invites us too. I stay out of the competition but I sure like to party with them.

Oh one last thing…the point of this blog entry: They describe themselves as FMS’ers: Fear of missing something’ and the latest: FOMO’s or ‘fear of missing out’. Because of these ‘titles’ hardly anyone does a no show in fear of the obvious…I think it’s hilarious. 

Are you one of these? Or do you have another acronym that describes you? Do tell!

Hi Al:  So sorry to hear that your prep was keeping you down. Sounds like you went through an awful bout. I hope that it is finally over.  I wish I could’ve given you a heads up earlier but I was not aware of your happenings until I blogged it. So you must be excited?!  But….  

Al….we need to talk…I have had a quite a few emails in regards to your comment.  So….it seems from what you have written that you are disclosing the info that you and Howie, OUR Howie is your house mate? Or am I reading this wrong? I know that there is a man named Howard that you live with/take care of.  Are we all now privy to the fact that Howard is actually Howie?  Please confirm or deny and clear it up here. Thanks.

Spread ‘em

The title got ya huh? 

Fooled you. We are gonna talk about nuts but that is about as far as I’m gonna go…up to you to use your creative mind if you choose. :)

I am a peanut butter nut; nothing out of the jar, thank you. I like mine freshly ground from Whole foods.  However, there  are a few brands that I like straight from the jar but skippy & Jif are not one of them. So when I got a little email didley from a company ‘Spread’ who specializes in nut butters mixed with all sorts of things, I just had to check them out.

If I like a product I have no problem blogging it and ’spreading’ the word.  However, the same goes for products that I feel are ripping off the general public.  And this is one of them…

I went to their website and perused the different flavors.  I did notice the price but what I didn’t notice was how much one got for that price.  Never do they once mention how big the jars are – now I know why. These little jars and I stress the word ‘little’, some only holding 4 servings worth, a serving being 2 tablespoons, is a whopping $10.50! You do the math.  For that price, they better be good for something else – a facial, or an eatable lubricant perhaps? Ha! Ha! – Okay, I lied. I took it a wee bit farther – couldn’t resist. 

Ahem…Back to the nuts…Well…once again, let me tell you marketing is everything. They call themselves ‘Style Peanut Spreads’, and ‘Trend Almond Spreads’, a ‘Nouveau Comfort Food’…yeah, for the nouveau riche – the only ones who could afford it let alone even consider buying it at that price. They claim, ‘The celebs drooled over these at the 2007 Emmy awards!’ It was the ‘must have’ hollywood gift over the holidays. Oh well, in that case, I’m convinced.  I must get myself some since NOW they are available to us regular folks for the first time.  Blah, blah ,blah, no thank you. 

Years ago I developed my own soy nut butter that my friends drooled over…they weren’t celebs but they all tried to convince me to go into business with my delicious concoctions.  I had some pretty tasty little flavors too….Hmmm, did I miss my calling?  Nah…I think I’ll spread my own and call it a day. Yum.

Heerre’s the beef!

As I mentioned we picked up our beef the other day. In case some of you don’t recall me mentioning, we ordered a ’split half’ cow from a local farm that raises grassfed beef and sells only direct to the public. Morris farms cows have been grassfed since birth and have only lived roaming the farmland eating fresh grass it’s entire life.  A truly ‘happy cow’. 

I was so excited to pick up beef at the designated spot in Berkeley.  Our good friend Gin and Rich met me there as we were splitting the ‘half split’ with them.  I got the chance to meet Joe, the owner of the farm; definitely a cowboy, sporting the traditional hat, boots, and all…wearing a big smile. He was just as delightful to meet in person as he was when I spoke to him on the phone a few months back. I asked him how the cows were this year.  In ‘meat’ talk that meant, ‘Was there enough grass to fatten them up to a healthy size?’ Joe said the butcher was extremely happy. I was too, not that I would know the difference but I trusted he knew his stuff. 

The meat was delivered freshly frozen in neatly packed boxes in a big semi.  42 lbs of ground beef and 44 lbs of every cut you could imagine in the deepest reddest color of fresh meat I have ever seen, all packaged and ready to store in the freezer. At $6.30/lb it is the deal anyone would be crazy not to take advantage of.  We split our ‘half split’ drooling over the anticipation of what it was going to taste like, planning our next gathering together in celebration of discovering this wonderful new way to enjoy the beef.   

As I drove home I felt so grateful that I could finally start eating meat again and not feel guilty knowing that these cows were given the best humane lives before their lives were taken to nourish and feed me.  These cows were raised living strictly off the grass of the land, no grains at all for these well-taken care of cows.  They are left free to roam as they please, their entire lives moving from acre to acre eating their way across the farmlands. As the land and the animals are taken care of in a holistic approach, the result is native grasses and trees are expanding on the farm land and creeks are becoming healthy and cleaner. By supporting this farm I / we are supporting the environment, not contributing to destroying the ozone layer through methane gasses and the production of unhealthy and downed cows raised in factory farms. Enough said on that.  Today’s write is bragging about Morris and their cows, not the disasters of factory farming.

When I got home I excitedly put away all of the beef in our freezer examining each cut as I placed it gently inside.  I left out 2 lbs of ground beef – We were going to make burgers as soon as they thawed!

Last night was the night. Just as I expected the meat had thawed.  I opened one package of the ground beef seasoned it with a little S & P and carefully formed them into 2 perfect burgers ready for the grill. I whipped up a small salad of chopped celery and crispy Persian cucumbers and sides of thinly sliced Roma tomatoes topped with fresh mozzarella, basil and my favorite olive oil.  I headed outside to where the burgers were slow cooking, a little tip from Morris.  Grassfed beef needs to be cooked slowly, the flame never touching the meat.  It should not be cooked well done, and you’ve really screwed a good piece of meat if you burn it ever!…medium rare or rare is the best for this meat so if you are a well-done kind of beef eater, you need to try something new.  

Within 15 minutes the burgers were done, the cheese perfectly melted on top.  We sandwiched them between Rudi’s organic buns, threw on minimal condiments…I wanted to taste this meat…and dove in. My mouth was happy! Doug cooked it perfectly. Not only was it medium rare how I like it, the texture of the beef was like no other….it was first of all very juicy and it held together and didn’t shrink from the cooking…but it was the texture mixed in with the fresh taste…I can’t really describe it but it was smoother and less chunky if that makes sense and the taste..well I don’t know how to describe it either…ya know, whatever.  All I can say was that it was simple delicious and that is was the best burgers we have ever had bar none.  We both agreed on that. We can’t wait to sample the rest of the cuts.

Hello Doug: Yeah I thought that was kind of funny that there were no comments. I meant to add this video yesterday because it felt so apropos considering the content yesterday…but I forgot nad now I can’t find it….Oh well…it is a pretty scary clip and even more of a reason why bulletproof clothing could be needed for the everyday person (?)  What is this world coming to?  Hmmm…Oh Btw, did I mention how great the burger was last night? :)

Hi anon:  I missed your comment last week – sorry, I rarely visit my archives. Hopefully, you’ll get the opportunity to come on over to this blog and visit.  Thanks for your open and honest comments in regards the movie, ‘Into the wild’.  I know what you mean by wanting to ‘free’ yourself from materialism and attachment, detaching yourself from the ‘bondage of society’. Perhaps you can do part of it as you stated.  Lately on this blog, freeing ourselves of just what you mentioned has been big in our lives. I will speak for myself and say purging has been so liberating for me; the less I have the more I feel light and less bogged down.  I feel like I can think clearer and I actually appreciate the things that I have more so because I am using them more; nothing left here that doesn’t have a use.  I also don’t have to rummage through the mess to get to what I really want to ’see’.  Clearing the clutter unclogs the clutter in my mind too…unnecessary thoughts and identities…another areas I am trying to purge :)

Hi Howie:  I know what you mean. I know that I make ‘light and fun’ on of the subject of armored clothing, but it is truly scary that this world has come to that.

In regards to Madaline, I do not think of her as ’saint madaline.’ Where did that come from?  Do I think that she has some pretty good ideas beside the killing route? Yes, I do, but I am also open to hearing some other ideas if anyone out there has any to contribute.  Do you have any? Perhaps Carr can give some advice on how to turn this messed up world around?

Hey readers….So Obama is on the ticket.  I am delighted. I was listening to the Ronn Owens show on KGO yesterday and a guy emailed in the same question that I asked Doug the other day, ‘What if Hillary decides to run as an Independent?’  Ronn said, “I  only have one word: McCain.”  I added to that…I have four words:  ‘McCain, and we’re screwed.’ Something to think about.  For you McCain fans…just my opinion.
